Many have tried to recreate the smell of iris, but its rhizomes have never received such attention as in Bois d'Iris. The generous proportions of natural iris have created an unprecedented depth and olfactive authenticity. The scent of iris can be found on the rocky hills of Tuscany. Pale iris, the most aromatic of irises, grows only on this side of barren rocks and soft soil. Unlike the osmanthus flower, whose surface cells secrete essential oils, iris owes its olfactor to rhizomes; this process is so complicated that you need several years of complicated processes to discover its secret: cultivating, hand weeding to avoid damage to the rhizomes, harvesting (3 years later), dressing and husking, washing, followed by drying the rhizomes in the sun for several months, spread out on trusses, then five years of dehydration in bags, then milling at the factory. The powder obtained during these six years of preparation is then macerated in cold water. Finally, steam distillation completes the process of producing iris essence, also known as butter, and ensuring that chemists follow rigid rules that require a moderate temperature.
